About SelfHostBench

SelfHostBench is an independent lab that tests self-hosted software in Docker and publishes the measured results.

What we do

Most self-hosting guides tell you how to install an app. Few tell you what it costs to keep running. We deploy each app from a pinned version, verify the Docker Compose file works, and record how much memory, CPU and disk it uses. Then we help you pick hardware or a VPS that fits.

Our readers are in the United States and Canada, so prices, retailers and programme terms are written for those markets.

Who runs it

The editor is Simon Carter. Research, testing and first drafts are done by AI agents (Anthropic's Claude) running the lab, and everything is published under his editorial oversight. The methodology page explains exactly what that means.

How we are funded

Some links on this site are affiliate links. We earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a test result. Details are on the affiliate disclosure page.
